Quantified Musician was a live performance installation created for the Pike & Rose Audio Visual Arts Festival in 2015.

 

Intended to show the futility of quantifying the arts, this installation combined a live piano performance with large scale sound and light projection. The piece combined an exquisite solo Chopin recital with an information set that corresponded to the music’s measurable quantities. The artist herself was measured and clocked, while the keyboard’s midi information offered a running tally of each key played.

 

Like human beings, art is not the sum of it’s parts; this juxtaposition of music and its measurable quantities illustrates the absurdity of our desire to quantify and define the arts.
